China Men Struggle to Emulate Female

China women volleyball team defied
expectations to qualify for the London Olympics by claiming a top
three spot at this month World Cup in Japan.
The women side shocked many in the Volleyball
fraternity B> fellow staff B>
with a series of commanding
performances in claiming the bronze B> bronze B>
at the Quadrennial competition .
CRI Jonathon Alpart spoke to China Volleyball
Association vice-secretary Lv Yajun to evaluate China men chances of emulating their
female counterparts .
Twelve teams will take
part in the men and women volleyball events at the London
Olympics next year. With hosts Great Britain claiming one of those
spots, that leaves 11 coveted spaces up for grabs .
The road B> travel B>
to qualify for London can be an arduous B > hard B> one, but the earliest chance national teams have
to claim their spot is at the FIVB World Cup held from November to < br /> December in Japan.
China women qualified for the World Cup after
winning the Asian Championship earlier in the year, and then
performed well beyond expectations in finishing third at the World
Cup to book their
place B> set to the position B> in London.
Wins over Japan, Serbia and Germany – each top ten
teams, were the highlights B> Highlights B> and see the Chinese team travel to the Olympics
next year confident that they can emulate B> follow B>
the glorious China teams of
1984 and 2004 to take Olympic gold .
“It was an inspiration for China to claim a place
at the Olympics. We will prepare a strategy for the Olympics. There
are still about seven or eight months until the Olympics, and I
believe that we can be even better by the time they come around B> visit B> .” B>
However, China men prospects are a little
different, and Lv is less confident about their chances in
London.
Currently 10th in the world
rankings B> world ranking B>, China men qualified for B> finalists B> the World Cup as runners-up at the Asian
Championships, and after losing their opening three matches in
Japan, their hopes of qualifying through the World Cup are
hanging by a
thread B> at risk B>.
“It will be hard for China men team to take
one of the first three tickets to the Olympics since only the top
three at the World Cup get the places. We will have chances against
the lesser teams , but the difference between China and European and
American teams is still huge. “
It seems China men hopes will lay in B> is B> performing well at the Asian Qualification
Tournament B> Championship B> next June where two places will be up for
grabs.
